A watched pot never boils
How many lessons do you remember your mother teach you to cook? You did what, even if your mother passed 20 years ago? Really? How old are you?
I must confess that I still remember many of the lessons. The problem is that none of them seem to work with microwave ovens, glass and small appliances. An example is the simple art of tea. Mother said, "Bring the water to a boil, measure the tea leaves and put them in water,Turn off the burner, the pot and let stand for at least 30 minutes. "He said that" steeping "the tea. Where to buy tea leaves?
Mother said: "Season your roast, put in a covered roaster, set the oven temperature to 250 degrees and bake for 6-8 hours." They changed the recipe, though, when they ran into a slow cooker at a flea market and bought for a dollar. Remember 20 years have passed. I used the same slow cooker that thousands of times over the past 20 years, but thisYear, I sent to Goodwill. Now I am back for the mother road.
In his later years, Mother began with a pressure cooker, especially for cooking meat. They are quickly fried meat, no matter what the cut, then pressure cook for few minutes. I was an adult before I realized that they did it because Dad teeth were bad, and has found it difficult to chew in order.
Vegetables were never dampened. They were cooked with a little 'of bacon to season them. By the way, did you know you canPork belly meat market is still in WalMart? I know that sometimes steamed vegetables, but I still prefer a mother.
If you have never had a breakfast, as my mother, you have been robbed. Bacon and sausage, fried egg cooked for everyone, as she wanted, homemade cookies jelly (made some out of the oven, while they were soft, some left until crispy, so everyone was happy) were home-made jams, with lots of butter, syrup, skiing (none of these things in bottlesfor us. We came in a gallon bucket and a half.)
There was no "set" of cookware. In fact most of their vessels from flea markets or dollar store they were purchased. They needed to change the name of the boss, have recommended. Mom has recommended, and that was good enough for me.
One of my favorite pans for all cooking utensils iron skillet was small his mother. They used to make corn bread and I still use it for the same purpose. It has never been washed. Clean cardTowels (which use a cloth), then lightly grease is willing to go the next time. It 'started like any other iron pan, very thin, but it's shed thickened corn bread, baked on that. Mom does not use secure all small packages of corn bread mix is, he made his. Probably ten or fifteen minutes added to their food, but it did not matter.
Mom loved to cook. I do not know. But remember the teachings, if you ever need to use them.
